Kent Mango Tree – Sweet, Juicy & Fiberless Florida Mango

Grow a classic Florida mango with the Kent Mango Tree (Mangifera indica ‘Kent’). Kent is a highly regarded mango variety known for its rich, sweet flavor, juicy flesh, very low fiber, and large fruit.

Kent has earned worldwide popularity because of its excellent eating quality. For home growers, it offers the opportunity to experience this classic mango freshly harvested and allowed to ripen naturally on your own property.

With its generous fruit size and smooth flesh, Kent is an excellent addition to Florida backyards, tropical food forests, home orchards, and mango collections.

🥭 Fruit Taste & Flavor

Kent mangoes have a rich, sweet and classic tropical mango flavor with juicy, tender flesh and a pleasant aroma.

One of Kent's best characteristics is its very low fiber content. The flesh is smooth and buttery, making Kent an excellent fresh-eating mango.

Its combination of sweetness, juiciness and smooth texture has helped make Kent popular both with backyard growers and commercially.

Enjoy Kent fresh from the tree or use it for smoothies, juices, fruit salads, salsa, sorbet, preserves and tropical desserts.

🥭 Fruit Size & Appearance

Kent produces large mangoes, commonly weighing approximately 1–2 pounds, although fruit size varies according to tree maturity, crop load, nutrition and growing conditions.

The fruit typically has a large oval shape. Its skin generally remains green to greenish-yellow as it matures, sometimes developing a reddish blush where exposed to sunlight.

Because Kent may remain fairly green even when mature, skin color alone isn't always the best indicator of ripeness.

Inside, Kent develops beautiful deep yellow to orange flesh that is juicy, smooth and nearly fiberless.

🌳 Kent Mango Tree Size

Kent is a vigorous, large-growing mango tree.

If allowed to grow naturally without pruning, mature trees can eventually reach approximately 20–40 feet or more under favorable tropical conditions.

For residential landscapes, regular pruning can keep Kent much smaller. With consistent annual canopy management, backyard growers can maintain the tree around 10–15 feet tall, although this requires ongoing pruning.

Because of its vigor, Kent is best suited to in-ground planting where adequate space is available. Young trees can be grown temporarily in large containers, but Kent is not generally considered an ideal permanent container mango.

🌴 Origin of the Kent Mango

The Kent mango originated in Coconut Grove, Florida, during the 1930s. The original tree grew from a seed planted on the property of Leith D. Kent.

Kent later became an important commercial mango because of its large fruit, excellent flavor and low-fiber flesh.

The variety has Florida mango heritage and is traditionally associated with the Brooks/Haden family of mangoes.

Botanical Name: Mangifera indica ‘Kent’
Common Names: Kent Mango, Kent Mango Tree
Other Names: No widely recognized alternative cultivar name.

📅 Kent Mango Fruiting Season

Kent is generally considered a mid- to late-season mango in South Florida.

Fruit commonly ripens from approximately July through August, although the exact harvest window varies according to location, flowering time, temperatures and seasonal weather.

This later harvest makes Kent a valuable addition to a mango collection containing early-season varieties because it can help extend your homegrown mango season.

In Central Florida, harvest timing may differ depending on winter temperatures and flowering conditions.

☀️ Kent Mango Tree Care

Sunlight: Plant your Kent mango tree in full sun, ideally where it receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Strong sunlight encourages healthy growth, flowering and fruit development.

Soil: Mango trees prefer well-draining soil. Avoid planting where water regularly remains around the root system.

Watering: Water newly planted Kent mango trees regularly while their root systems become established. Once established, mango trees are relatively drought tolerant. Allow the soil to drain between watering and avoid constantly saturated conditions.

Fertilizing: Feed young trees with a fertilizer appropriate for mangoes or tropical fruit trees. Micronutrients may also be beneficial depending on local soil conditions. Avoid excessive nitrogen on mature trees because it can encourage vigorous leafy growth rather than flowering and fruit production.

Pruning: Because Kent can become a large tree, regular pruning is important for backyard growing. Prune after harvest to control height, encourage lateral branching, improve airflow and make harvesting easier.

Cold Protection: Mango trees are tropical and sensitive to frost and freezing temperatures, particularly while young. In Central Florida and other areas where occasional freezes occur, plant Kent in a warm, protected location and protect young trees during cold weather.

Container Growing: Young Kent mango trees can be grown in large containers, but because Kent is a vigorous cultivar, in-ground planting is preferable for long-term growth and fruit production when adequate space is available.

🌱 Why Grow a Kent Mango Tree?

Kent is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a large, sweet and nearly fiberless mango with classic tropical flavor.

Its generous fruit size means one mango can provide plenty of juicy flesh, while its smooth texture makes it particularly enjoyable for fresh eating.

Kent's later harvest period can also help extend mango season, making it a great companion to early- and mid-season varieties in a Florida backyard orchard or food forest.
