Carrie Mango Tree – Rich, Sweet & Fiberless Florida Mango

Grow one of Florida’s classic dessert mangoes with the Carrie Mango Tree (Mangifera indica ‘Carrie’). Carrie is prized for its intensely rich, sweet flavor, powerful tropical aroma, juicy fiberless flesh, and manageable growth habit.

Unlike mango varieties grown primarily for appearance or shipping durability, Carrie is all about flavor. Its soft, aromatic flesh makes it an outstanding mango for eating fresh from the tree and a great choice for Florida backyards, tropical gardens, food forests, and mango collectors.

🥭 Fruit Taste & Flavor

Carrie mango is known for its very rich, sweet, aromatic and complex tropical flavor. It has an intense mango taste that can be much stronger than the mild flavor of many commercially available supermarket mangoes.

The flesh is soft, juicy and virtually fiberless, with a creamy texture when properly ripened. Carrie also develops a strong, distinctive aroma that is part of its appeal to mango enthusiasts.

This is an excellent dessert mango for eating fresh. Carrie can also be used in smoothies, juices, sauces, sorbets, fruit bowls and tropical desserts.

🥭 Fruit Size & Appearance

Carrie generally produces small to medium-sized mangoes, often around 8–16 ounces, although fruit size varies according to tree age, crop load and growing conditions.

The fruit is usually oval to somewhat rounded. Its skin typically remains green to yellow-green as it ripens and may develop some yellow coloration.

Carrie is not known for developing the dramatic red blush seen on varieties such as Haden. Don't judge this mango by its color—a ripe Carrie can still have relatively green skin while hiding intensely flavorful, deep yellow-orange flesh inside.

🌳 Carrie Mango Tree Size

Carrie has a compact to moderately compact growth habit compared with many vigorous mango varieties.

With regular pruning, Carrie can be maintained at approximately 8–12 feet tall, making it an excellent choice for residential landscapes where homeowners want to keep mango trees at an accessible harvesting height.

Without pruning, the tree can grow larger over time, so annual size management is recommended.

Its manageable growth habit makes Carrie a great option for Florida backyards, smaller tropical gardens and food forests. Young trees can also be grown in large containers with proper pruning and care.

🌴 Origin of the Carrie Mango

The Carrie mango originated in South Florida and was named after Carrie Zill, a member of the well-known Zill family associated with Florida mango cultivation and breeding.

Carrie has become a favorite among Florida mango enthusiasts because of its exceptional eating quality and distinctive flavor.

Botanical Name: Mangifera indica ‘Carrie’
Common Names: Carrie Mango, Carrie Mango Tree
Other Names: No widely recognized alternative cultivar name.

📅 Carrie Mango Fruiting Season

Carrie is generally considered an early- to mid-season mango in Florida.

In South Florida, the fruit commonly ripens around June through July, although the exact harvest period varies depending on weather, flowering time, location and growing conditions.

Trees grown farther north in Florida may have a somewhat different harvest window.

☀️ Carrie Mango Tree Care

Sunlight: Plant your Carrie mango tree in full sun, ideally where it receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plenty of sunlight encourages healthy growth, flowering and fruit production.

Soil: Mango trees prefer well-draining soil. Avoid planting where water regularly stands around the roots, as mangoes do not tolerate prolonged waterlogged conditions.

Watering: Water newly planted trees regularly while their root systems become established. Once established, mango trees become relatively drought tolerant. Allow the soil to drain between watering rather than keeping it constantly wet.

Fertilizing: Feed young Carrie mango trees with a fertilizer appropriate for mangoes or tropical fruit trees. Micronutrients may also be beneficial depending on your soil. Avoid excessive nitrogen on mature trees because it can encourage leafy growth instead of flowering and fruit production.

Pruning: Carrie responds well to pruning and can be maintained as a manageable backyard tree. Prune after harvest to control height, encourage lateral branching, improve airflow and make harvesting easier.

Cold Protection: Mango trees are tropical and can be damaged by frost and freezing temperatures, particularly when young. In Central Florida and other areas that experience occasional freezes, choose a warm, protected planting location and protect young trees during cold weather.

Container Growing: Carrie can be grown in a large container, particularly while young. Use a well-draining growing medium and a container with excellent drainage. Container-grown mango trees require additional attention to watering, fertilizing, pruning and root space.

🌱 Why Grow a Carrie Mango Tree?

Carrie is an excellent choice for mango lovers who prioritize flavor over appearance.

The fruit may not develop the bright red coloration associated with commercial mangoes, but inside you'll find rich, sweet, aromatic, juicy and virtually fiberless flesh.

Its combination of premium dessert-quality fruit and a manageable growth habit makes Carrie an excellent addition to a Florida backyard orchard or tropical food forest.
