Harvest Moon Mango Tree – Large, Sweet & Fiberless Florida Mango

Go big with the Harvest Moon Mango Tree (Mangifera indica ‘Harvest Moon’), a Florida mango cultivar known for producing very large, attractive fruit with sweet tropical flavor and smooth, low-fiber to fiberless flesh.

Harvest Moon is an exciting choice for backyard growers who love impressive, oversized mangoes without sacrificing eating quality. Its combination of fruit size, sweetness, and Florida heritage makes it a standout addition to a tropical food forest, backyard orchard, or specialty mango collection.

🥭 Fruit Taste & Flavor

Harvest Moon mangoes have a sweet, pleasant and rich tropical mango flavor with juicy, smooth flesh.

While some exceptionally large mango varieties are grown primarily for size, Harvest Moon offers both impressive fruit and enjoyable fresh-eating quality.

The flesh has very little objectionable fiber, providing a smooth texture that makes the mango excellent for eating fresh.

Harvest Moon is also great for smoothies, juices, fruit salads, mango salsa, sorbets, desserts and preserves. Because the fruit can become exceptionally large, a single mango can provide plenty of flesh for sharing or recipes.

🥭 Fruit Size & Appearance

Fruit size is one of Harvest Moon's biggest attractions.

Harvest Moon produces large to very large mangoes, with individual fruits capable of reaching approximately 2 pounds or more under favorable growing conditions. Fruit size varies depending on tree maturity, crop load, nutrition, weather and growing conditions.

The fruit generally has a rounded to oval shape and develops attractive green, yellow and sometimes reddish coloration as it matures.

Inside, the fruit has abundant yellow to orange flesh with a juicy, smooth texture.

🌳 Harvest Moon Mango Tree Size

Harvest Moon develops into a moderately vigorous mango tree.

Like most mangoes, the tree can eventually become large if left completely unpruned. Backyard growers can use annual canopy management to maintain the tree at a much more practical harvesting height.

With regular pruning, Harvest Moon can generally be maintained at approximately 10–15 feet tall in a residential landscape.

Because this is not a true dwarf mango, in-ground planting is generally recommended when adequate space is available.

🌴 Origin of the Harvest Moon Mango

The Harvest Moon mango originated in South Florida and was selected by Florida mango breeder Gary Zill.

The cultivar is associated with the Zill family's long history of selecting and developing mango varieties with desirable characteristics such as excellent flavor, unusual fruit profiles and improved eating quality.

Harvest Moon is particularly notable for combining exceptionally large fruit with good dessert quality.

Botanical Name: Mangifera indica ‘Harvest Moon’
Common Names: Harvest Moon Mango, Harvest Moon Mango Tree
Other Names: No widely recognized alternative cultivar name.

📅 Harvest Moon Mango Fruiting Season

Harvest Moon generally ripens during the summer mango season in Florida and is commonly considered a mid-season variety.

In South Florida, harvest is generally around June through July, although exact timing varies depending on weather, flowering time, location and growing conditions.

Trees grown farther north in Florida may flower and ripen on a somewhat different schedule.

☀️ Harvest Moon Mango Tree Care

Sunlight: Plant your Harvest Moon mango tree in full sun, ideally where it receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day. Strong sunlight promotes healthy growth, flowering and fruit development.

Soil: Mango trees prefer well-draining soil. Avoid locations where water remains around the root system for extended periods.

Watering: Water newly planted trees regularly while their root systems become established. Once established, mango trees become relatively drought tolerant. Allow the soil to drain between watering and avoid constantly saturated roots.

Fertilizing: Feed young trees with a fertilizer appropriate for mangoes or tropical fruit trees. Micronutrients may also be beneficial depending on local soil conditions. Avoid excessive nitrogen on mature trees because it can encourage excessive leafy growth rather than flowering and fruit production.

Pruning: Prune after harvest to control tree height, encourage lateral branching, improve airflow and keep fruit within easier reach. Regular pruning is particularly useful for a variety producing such large fruit because it makes harvesting much easier.

Fruit Support: Because Harvest Moon can produce exceptionally large mangoes, heavily loaded branches may occasionally benefit from support. Maintaining a strong, well-branched canopy through proper pruning can help the tree carry developing fruit.

Cold Protection: Mango trees are tropical and sensitive to frost and freezing temperatures, particularly while young. In Central Florida and other areas where occasional freezes occur, choose a warm, protected planting location and protect young trees during cold weather.

Container Growing: Young Harvest Moon trees can be grown in large containers, but because of the tree's growth and very large fruit, in-ground planting is preferable for long-term production when climate and space permit.

🌱 Why Grow a Harvest Moon Mango Tree?

Harvest Moon is an excellent choice for mango lovers who believe bigger can be better.

The variety combines very large fruit, sweet tropical flavor, abundant juicy flesh and a smooth low-fiber texture. The impressive mangoes can become a real conversation starter when hanging from the tree.

For backyard growers who enjoy unusual or collectible mango cultivars, Harvest Moon brings something different to the orchard: a mango that delivers both size and eating quality.
