A Naturally Compact Fig
Fignomenal is a true dwarf selection with a dense, rounded growth habit. Its manageable size makes it particularly well suited to containers, patios and small gardens.
The cultivar’s patent describes three-year-old plants measuring approximately 2–2½ feet tall and wide when grown in a three-gallon container. This is a documented container-grown size, rather than a guaranteed maximum. Plant size varies with age, container size and growing conditions.
Botanical name: Ficus carica
Cultivar: ‘PT-DF-14’
Marketed name: Fignomenal
Plant type: Dwarf, deciduous fruiting shrub
Do You Need a Second Fig Tree?
Fignomenal is self-fertile, so a single plant can produce fruit. You do not need a second fig tree to enjoy a harvest.
Fignomenal Fig Tree Care
Sunlight: Provide full sun, ideally six to eight hours or more of direct sunlight daily.
Soil: Use well-drained soil or a suitable container potting mix. Avoid prolonged waterlogged conditions.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment and fruit development. Check container moisture frequently during hot weather.
Mulching: Mulch the root zone to conserve moisture, keeping mulch away from the base of the plant.
Fertilizing: Feed according to plant growth, soil conditions and fertilizer label directions. Container-grown plants need particular attention to nutrition.
Pruning: Its naturally dwarf habit reduces the need for heavy size-control pruning. Remove damaged or crossing branches as needed.
Cold Protection: Protect young plants and container roots during freezing weather. Cold hardiness does not mean developing fruit and tender growth are frost-proof.
Harvesting Your Figs
Pick figs when they soften and yield gently to the touch. Ripe fruit may droop at the stem. Figs do not continue ripening after picking, so allow them to mature on the plant.
Fignomenal can develop fruit over an extended growing season under favorable conditions. Actual ripening dates depend on climate, sunlight, plant maturity and dormancy. Year-round harvesting should not be assumed for an outdoor Florida plant.
