Brogdon Avocado Tree – Cold-Tolerant Florida Avocado
Looking for an avocado tree that is better suited to cooler parts of Florida? The Brogdon Avocado Tree (Persea americana ‘Brogdon’) is an excellent variety to consider for a Florida backyard orchard or food forest.
Brogdon produces attractive purple-skinned avocados with creamy flesh and is especially valued by Florida gardeners for its combination of good fruit quality and greater cold tolerance than many tropical avocado varieties.
For gardeners in Central Florida, including Palm Bay, Melbourne and surrounding Brevard County communities, Brogdon is an especially interesting avocado variety to consider.
📍 Local pickup available in Palm Bay, Florida, near Melbourne.
🥑 Brogdon Avocado Flavor
Brogdon is prized for its rich, creamy avocado flesh and is excellent for:
• Fresh eating
• Guacamole
• Avocado toast
• Salads
• Sandwiches and wraps
• Dips and spreads
Its smaller fruit and richer flesh offer a different eating experience from many of the very large, mild-flavored Florida avocado varieties.
🥑 Fruit Size & Appearance
Brogdon produces relatively small-to-medium avocados.
UF/IFAS lists the fruit at approximately 8–12 ounces with a distinctive purple skin.
The darker fruit also makes Brogdon visually distinctive among the many green-skinned Florida avocado varieties.
🌳 Tree Growth
Avocado trees can become large trees if left unpruned.
For backyard growers, regular selective pruning can be used to maintain a more manageable tree. UF/IFAS notes that avocado trees can be kept under approximately 15 feet with appropriate annual pruning.
Give your Brogdon avocado adequate room, good sunlight and excellent drainage.
❄️ A Great Avocado to Consider for Central Florida
One of Brogdon's most important characteristics is its cold tolerance.
UF/IFAS classifies Brogdon as having high cold tolerance relative to many other Florida avocado cultivars and places it among Mexican and Mexican-hybrid types that may withstand temperatures into the low 20s under favorable circumstances.
This does NOT mean the tree is freeze-proof.
Young trees, newly planted trees and actively growing trees can still suffer significant cold damage. Site selection, tree health, duration of cold and local microclimate all influence freeze injury.
For Central Florida gardeners, planting in a protected, warm location and having a cold-protection plan is still recommended.
📅 Brogdon Avocado Harvest Season
Typical Florida Harvest: July–September
UF/IFAS lists Brogdon's maturity season at approximately July 15 through September 15.
For The Island Gardeners Harvest Planner™, we recommend assigning Brogdon to:
July
August
September
Harvest periods are approximate and intended as a planning guide. Actual flowering, fruiting and harvest dates can vary with location, weather, winter temperatures, tree maturity and growing conditions.
🌼 Pollination
Brogdon is classified as a Type B avocado.
Avocado flowers have unusual flowering behavior, with A- and B-type cultivars opening their female and male flower stages at different times.
A single avocado tree can produce fruit, but growing compatible A- and B-type varieties near one another may improve opportunities for cross-pollination and fruit set.
☀️ Brogdon Avocado Tree Care
Sunlight:
Plant in full sun for best growth and fruit production.
Soil:
Excellent drainage is extremely important. Avocados do not tolerate prolonged flooding or poorly drained soil.
Water:
Water young trees regularly while they establish, but avoid keeping the root zone continuously saturated.
Fertilizing:
Feed appropriately during the growing season based on tree age and local growing conditions.
Pruning:
Prune selectively to manage tree height, improve structure and make harvesting easier.
Cold Protection:
Although Brogdon is more cold tolerant than many avocado varieties, young trees should still be protected during freezing weather.
